OPAL TRIPLETS CABOCHONS

Triplets are a great way to get a lot of color in
a relatively inexpensive opal A triplet is a "sandwich" made of a
base material, a thin slice of opal and a clear cap material all epoxied together to form
a triplet cabochon. The clear cap is sometimes clear quartz but, usually composed of
a borosilicate type of glass that is quite hard. The clear covering is quite
hard and is more tolerant of abuse than the opal material itself which makes triplets a
good choice for rings. The base material is usually black or dark
material and various materials are used including ironstone, black opal potch, jade, jet,
glass and various other materials. For a thorough explanation of triplets and their

Australia. Mosaic Opals are a triplet that is constructed with little
pieces of colorful opal instead of one thin slice of opal. An

Gilson is man made opal material
comparable to laboratory grown gem stones. This is not glass or plastic material,
but a man made opal resembling natural opal material. These particular Gilson Opal
