The jewelry that we create with imitation opal is beautiful and has a great deal of appeal to some customers in the marketplace. So, that we will not confuse or mislead anyone we are separating these pieces from the rest of our jewelry. This way no one will confuse the imitation opal from the natural opals, or confuse them with fantastic lab grown Gilson created opals which are in a class by themselves. There have literally been law suits regarding terminology here so I want to be very careful in explaining what imitation opal is to be best of my ability. The people who make imitation opal grow opal material and then fill the material with resin. So that, the colors that you see are opal colors or opal play of color, but the opal material is suspended in a resin base material. I have been told that the opal comprises about 70% to 80% of the material and the resin about 20% to 30% of the material, but I cannot testify to that. I can tell you that the product is beautiful. Like all resins, this material is sensitive to heat and will burn. It cannot be used for any projects involving heat that would melt any other resin based substance. We are happy to create jewelry using this material and can supply the material in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes on a special order basis.
