If you are not familiar with doublets, we invite you to visit the Doc's Corner Page for an explanation of what doublets are and how they are constructed.  Briefly they are a cabochon composed of two layers, either a base material with a thin layer of opal on top, or an opal layer with a layer of quartz or glass on top.  So, doublets are a two part cabochon held together by epoxy or some other adhesive.  Constructing doublets is one way to enable the trade to utilize good opal material that is too thin to make a cabochon on its own.  There are many beautiful opal doublet cabochons in the world that would not exist if this technique were not used.  Take a look at the ones that we have listed here.  If you have any questions be sure and contact us.
Doublets are customarily sold by the piece or each, not by weight since the weight and thickness of the backing material could add a great of valueless weight.
If you would like to own one of these doublets, but are unable to set it for yourself, we will be happy to design a custom setting just for you.

Dark Beauty Doublet Cabochon - $ 60.00
Dark Beauty Doublet cabochon is another great example of directional fire.  This is almost the most extreme case that I have observed that shows this phenomena so clearly.  On the one hand if the cabochon is flat you are likely to see one of the dark views from the top or second row.  but, orient the cabochon as you would for a pendant particularly as in the far right angle on the second row and you have a rolling rainbow going all of the way across the cabochon in very bright rich colors.  You cannot miss with this one as long as you respect the limitations of the direction of the play of color when you set the cabochon.
  • 12.49 mm x 6.33 mm
  • Very dark gray base with full coverage broad flash is a bright rainbow of rich colors depending on the angle of view all over an ironstone base.

Bright Colors with some Clouds Opal Doublet Cabochon -
$ 40.00 HOLD
Bright colors with some Clouds Opal Doublet Cabochon is a blue base with some very bright multi-color play of color that is slightly dampened by a little cloudiness on the surface of the cabochon.  If the stone is oriented where all of the play of color is firing off the cloudiness seems to disappear altogether.
  • 12.03 mm x 5.91 mm
  • A blue base with some cloudiness showing a bright array of multi-color fire

Bright Fire Opal Doublet Cabochon - $ 40.00
Bright Fire Opal Doublet Cabochon is another doublet with some great direction fire.  This particular piece will show its best colors as a pendant.  You can see the dramatic difference in some angles of the cabochon lying flat and held up at a pendant orientation.  The colors fire from some angles when it is flat, of course, but you can set the opal cabochon to show its color all of the time as a pendant.  There is some amount of cloudiness but it seems to be overcome when the brilliant fire colors are flashing.
  • 10.82 mm x 6.11 mm
  • A blue base with a brilliant multi-color display of play of color directionally

Color Lines Opal Doublet Cabochon - $ 40.00
Color Lines Opal Doublet Cabochon is so named because from a horizontal oriental as you could set the opal in a pendant lines of color cross the stone running diagonally and covering almost the full surface of the stone with bright coloration.  The play of color is definitely directional, but it is beautiful.
  • 11.89 mm x 7.31 mm
  • A blue base with slight cloudiness and directionally brilliant fire crossing the cabochon diagonally in a pendant orientation with the color running from side to side.
