Mexican Cantera Opals
These Mexican Cantera Opals are examples of opal material encapsulated in matrix. In this case the opal material is Mexican opal and the encapsulated material runs the gamut of the colors of the Mexican fire opals from clear to deep orange/red. If you look up the word "cantera" in your Spanish dictionary you will find that "cantera" means "quarry", or as we use the term a "block of rock." Cantera opals then are opalized material held in the host rock. Generally, in Mexican canters opals this rock is rhyolite of a pinkish color, but it can appear white, tan, brownish and orange looking. This is the least expensive of the Mexican material. We usually have some of this rough around, if you are interested please inquire.
